Acoustics of wood by Voichita Bucur

Book description
The book 'Acoustics of Wood' is devoted to those aspects related to the development of acoustic methods as an effective means for examining physical properties of wood through an interdisciplinary approach. The main parts of the book are: environmental acoustics, material characterization and quality assessment. In the first part of the book a discussion of the physical phenomena associated with the propagation of acoustic waves in forests is presented. The behavior of wood and wood-based composites as materials used in architectural acoustics is also discussed. The second part was written in response to practical considerations about wood uses. This part provides an introductory understanding of basic aspects related to the theory of waves propagation in anisotropic solids, experimental methods for acoustics and mechanic characterization of wood, examination of wood anisotropy using ultrasonic parameters. In the third part wood quality assessment is discussed. Wood used for musical instruments has the most remarkable quality, with unique acoustic properties. In contrast with wood for musical instruments, free of defects, in common wood the defects are always present.

Finishing wood surfaces can be tricky and time-consuming, and all that effort and time may not yield the beautiful product envisioned at the start. Great Wood Finishes is written by an expert in the field to help the occasional finisher/refinisher or hobbyist woodworker avoid that problem. The book uses simple instructions and a wealth of illustrations to make the process easy and rewarding. Great Wood Finishes begins with a thorough discussion of tools and materials. It moves on to instructions and photo essays covering every technique, including staining, glazing, and rubbing out. The final section, primarily photos and captions, covers specialty finishes that can easily be created by combining the techniques presented earlier in the book.

Spray Finishing by Andy Charron

Book description
There are several good books on finishing avaiable. I like the Jeff Jewitt books along with the higher quality of the page material that the graphics are printed on. This book is not up to date with the latest materials or finishes and is printed on lower grade paper which yields poorer images than the Taunton series of books. It has some good information but is pretty much average.

Brian followed his parents in becoming a mechanical artist, employed by ABC and CBS in Manhattan for over a decade. As the graphic arts profession digitalized he adapted to graphics programs on computer, the result of which you see here. His interest in music and art restoration led him to study first with local artisans at his home in Colorado, and then to relocate to New England to study with masters there. His workshop is in Danbury, Connecticut, where he serves the local area, but most of his business is with clients who ship instruments from around the country. He works with his wife Kathleen.

The Varnishes of the Italian Violin-Makers of the Sixteenth, Seventeenth and Eighteenth Centuries, and Their Influence on Tone by George Fry

Book description
The casual observations which led to the interesting research which forms the subject of this Treatise came as a "bolt from the blue." Experts who have had constant opportunities for studying the varnish on old Italian instruments have, without exception, accepted the theory that it is an oil-varnish coloured to suit individual taste, although in no single case have their own descriptions of its appearance been found to support this conclusion; various reasons and excuses have been suggested why modem violin-makers have been unable to reproduce it. No scientist or chemist appears to have given much attention to the subject, for the simple reason that no means have been available for a complete investigation.

Understanding Wood Finishing. How to Select and Apply the Right Finish by Bob Flexner

Book description
Given the abundance of titles on wood finishing published in 1993, librarians might be inclined to dismiss this one, which would be a definite mistake. Flexner, who has 20 years of finishing experience and has written for many woodworking magazines, assumes no experience in finishing wood. He provides comprehensive treatment of the various finishes, application techniques, chemical cautions, and reactions, convincingly overthrowing much of the conventional wisdom about finishing. His book gives readers a wood finishing consultant available whenever they need it for the price of an hour's time. This book dispels the myths about wood finishing and explains exactly how and why every finish behaves the way it does

Violin Varnish. A Plausible Re-creation of the Varnish Used by the Italian Violin Makers Between the Years 1550 and 1750. by Joseph Michelman

Book description
After more than eight years of extensive research on the varnish used by the Italian Violin Makers from 1550 to 1750 A. D., it has not been possible to corroborate the results in the chemical laboratory. This is due entirely to the unavailability of samples of the varnish for confirmatory analysis. Violins made by the Italian masters of this period are so valuable and so scarce that a small sample of the varnish has not been procurable for experimental purposes. Therefore, synthesis must precede analysis .... and with no assistance from the latter.
