Complete Metalsmith by Tim McCreight
Book description I've had and used McCreight's original "Complete Metalsmith" for years and wasn't sure I needed the new version. After owning it for several months now I couldn't be happier. The author assumes that the reader is as interested in WHY things happen as he is. This is not a step-by-step project book, but a bench tool. Do you need to know how to score metal to make a sharp corner? How can you tell when a piece of metal is annealed? Have you been bezel setting stones and are now ready to advance to a prong setting? Ready to make a hinge? Casting? Fusing? Repoussé? Need to know what the Precious Metal Clay craze is about and how to start? It's all in here and the information is presented in a format made for the beginner or the experienced jeweler. He even covers how to photograph your work.
I love that McCreight shows several ways of doing things so that if you don't have the equipment or tools, you can still proceed. In his typical style, the author has thought of everything. He's even made a smaller and less expensive version of the book for the "starving artists" and students among us
Spiral-bound: 208 pages.

Electroplating (Workshop Practice Series, book 11) by J. Boyner
Book description The techniques of depositing a thin metallic layer on an object for decoration, corrosion protection, electrical conductivity, wear resistance and so on have been known for many years but have been developed and improved to a remarkable extent in the second half of this century. This book sets out to discuss the principles and practice of those forms of plating most suited to the amateur and small workshop, using relatively simple and inexpensive equipment to produce results virtually undetectable from work carried out by major plating concerns. Jack Poyner, a professional involved in all forms of plating for many years, is also a keen model engineer able to recognise the dividing line between what his average fellow enthusiast would consider practical and worthwhile and what is really better left to experts in the field. The result is a really useful and practical book, which will be of value to both amateur and light industrial users in many diverse fields.

Jewelry Concepts and Technology by Oppi Untracht
Book description Nearly ten years in preparation and production, Jewelry Concepts and Technology is the definitive guide and handbook for jewellery makers on all levels of ability. It is also a unique reference source for those not directly active in the field but who wish to gain an understanding of what lies behind the jewellery-making mystique. All traditional as well as innovative contemporary techniques are thoroughly described, making this. The more than 900 photographs in colour and black and white illustrate work of all degrees of complexity and show the incredible range of concepts which jewellers in all times, including today, incorporate in their work. Historic and ethnic jewellery, as well as contemporary work done by approximately 300 jewellers from twenty-six countries, are grouped under particular technical processes. This arrangement dramatically illustrates the mutual bonds between today's creative jewellers and their colleagues: historic style-oriented, and anonymous, tradition-dominated ethnic jewellers. The detailed text is accompanied by 377 illustrations showing tools and processes used to carry out particular techniques. In addition, thirty step-by-step photo demonstrations show master jewellers working from raw material to finished jewels, some of them revealing their methods for the first time. Supplemented by an extensive index, glossaries of jewellery forms and findings, and an international sources supply list, Jewelry Concepts and Technology is indispensable for anyone interested in any aspect of jewellery making.

Lost-Wax Casting. Old, new and Inexpensive methods by Fred R Sias, Jr.
Book description This book is a basic introduction to lost-wax casting with emphasis on jewelry making. It is designed to be used both as a textbook and a reference book and is directed primarily at beginners. Experienced casters, however, will probably find some useful ideas; they may even find some new techniques. Heavy emphasis is placed upon understanding why things are done in a particular way, rather than simply presenting a set of cookbook rules that will always work. The Electroplater's Handbook by C. W. Ammen
Book description "The Electroplater's Handbook" by C.W. Ammen is a decent book, which may be a good starting point. It's kind of the quality of book that you would expect to have the title "___[fill in the blank] for fun and profit". It has some good descriptions of plating at the molecular level. It's over 200 pages, and the chapter that covers the actual plating baths is only about 25 of those. Some of the bath descriptions are nothing more than recipes.
Ammen covers the basics pretty well, including a bit of chemistry, safety, work areas, and equipment. It is written such that a 14 yr old could understand it (maybe not ALL of the chemistry parts, though, but maybe), and it has a lot of theory. Even so, you may want a slightly more advanced book after starting. Ammen does a good job of getting the chemicals into the tub, then sort of walks away. One example: His chapter on cleaning is longer than the one that covers about 27 different baths!
This book doesn't cover a lot of pros/cons to the different baths. I worked in a plating plant for a year, plating nickel, chrome, gold, and a few other obscure metals. None of the plating baths we used were discussed, some of which were extremely common in the plating industry. (Maybe common baths are just a lot different for a hobbyist, either because of cost or EPA issues.)
I've used some electroless tin plating that I got from Gateway Electronics, a hobbyists electronic shop in San Diego, several times with success. The last time, it not only didn't plate, but it ate away some of my copper, too! This book had no information aside from a recipe for the bath. It is greatly lacking in the troubleshooting area.
If you want a very general book that will get you started, with a good introduction to plating, then I would strongly recommend this book.
However, if you are looking for a very specific bath, or need help troubleshooting, then this probably isn't the book you want. After you have a bath, this book is little help.
