Automatic Pianos. A Collector's Guide to the Pianola, Barrel Piano, & Aeolian Orchestrelle by Arthur W. J. G. Ord-Hume

Book description
The era of the self-playing or automatic piano embraced the first three decades of the 20th century. Piano-playing cabinets were followed by the pneumatic player-piano, soon to be known the world over by the name of the leading American make - Pianola. There were many other makes, of course, with names like Kastonome, Triumph, Pistonola, Claviola, Autoplayer and Apollo. Invented almost simultaneously in Germany and America, player pianos became the most sought-after addition to the family home and the huge industry that built them and made their perforated paper music rolls became both important and wealthy. This book, written by a world-renowned authority on mechanical music and its instruments, relates the development of the automatic piano from the spring-powered dulcimer-playing musical clocks of the 16th century through the once-popular barrel-playing pianos and street pianos to the great era of the Reproducing Piano that could bring a famous artist's interpretation of a musical classic into your own drawing-room. The inventors, their perpetual quest for perfection, and their successes and failures are related in this new and fully-illustrated history. Just how the automatic piano works is described in both words and the author's own clear line-drawings, together with 603 b/w and 43 full colour photos. Also, a guide to servicing, maintaining, and playing player pianos and the magnificent Aeolian Orchestrelle roll-playing reed organ is included. Illustrated appendices include a list of makers, brand-names, and a modern-day valuation guide. 43 color and 603 b/w photos Index

Chinese Musical Instruments (Chinese Music Monograph Series) by Yuan-Yuan Lee, Sin-Yan Shen

Book description
Pursuing our exploration of the almost limitless caverns of Chinese music and musical instruments, so much of which has never yet come to the knowledge of the rest of the world, we approach the subject from both the angles of principles and practice. Functional discussions of musical interest, cultural molding of musical psychology, instrumental effects and acoustics are emphasized. The exploration centers on the principle of cultural acoustics, i.e. the impacts of musical acoustics is strongly modified by our ear and brain which are products of culture. This popular book is written so that it requires no prior knowledge of Chinese music or acoustics. Also, no knowledge of the Chinese language is assumed. With the opening chapter we find ourselves at a focal point in the present study: The Cultural Acoustics of Chinese Musical Instruments? The cultural preference of harmony, and thus intervals and tones and rhythms used in music, distinguishes one music from another. Chinese music, however, is unique in its uninterrupted history of more than 8000 years and very early development of theoretical systematics, acoustical and material science, and orchestral practice.

Cordofones de Tecla Portugueses do Século XVII (Portuguese Stringed Keyboard Instruments of the 18th Century) by Gerhard Doderer and John Henry Van Der Meer

Book description
The history of keyboard instruments in Portugal has a special interest, not only because Domenico Scarlatti’s patron, Maria Barbara, was a Portuguese princess, but also because keyboard developments there followed a different course from the rest of Europe. The fret-free clavichord, for example, so common elsewhere in the second half of the eighteenth century, never really gained a strong following in Portugal, and Portuguese makers developed their own special version of the newly invented fortepiano.

Early Musical Instruments by David Munrow, Peter Plummer (director)

Book description
David Munrow introduces the full range of medieval and renaissance musical instruments in this newly remastered version for DVD. It was originally made as a six-part series for Granada Television, and filmed at Ordsall Hall, Salford. It represents a fascinating introduction to early musical instruments and features many memorable performances. Instruments such as the shawm, viol, crumhorn, recorder, regal, lute, tromba marina and serpent - and many more - are demonstrated with virtuosity and panache. David Munrow (1942-1976) was an English musician who brought a pioneering approach to the music of the medieval, renaissance and baroque periods. A virtuosic performer on the recorder and early wind instruments, he directed his ensemble, The Early Music Consort of London in a series of landmark recordings of early music. As well as performing and directing, he also provided the music for several films and television series, as well as writing the definitive book on early musical instruments.

Giraffes, Black Dragons, and Other Pianos. A Technological History from Cristofori to the Modern Concert Grand by Edwin Good

Book description
This lavishly illustrated book treats the history of the piano from its invention in 1700 to the present in terms of its technology. Looking at the technologies of design, materials, and manufacture, and focusing its description on specific existing pianos, it describes the changes in pianos from the earliest days to contemporary instruments. This revised edition incorporates the results of recent research that increases knowledge of the work of Bartolomeo Cristofori, the inventor of the piano; changes perceptions of how eighteenth-century pianos were made and used; adds to the available information about the important contributions of the Steinway Company; and describes the most recent changes to the piano. Guide du musée de la musique by

Book description

Book description

Japanese Musical Instruments (Images of Asia) by Hugh de Ferranti

Book description
Libro pequeño y caro. During Japan's early history, musical instruments were seen as sources of ritual power, allowing performers to call up divine forces for inspiration and aid. As Japan developed a court and then an urbanized society, instrumental performance remained at the heart of aesthetic experience,. playing diverse roles expanded to cover nearly every part of the society. Illustrated with images drawn from picture scrolls as well as photographs of instruments as they are used in performance, Japanese Musical Instruments is a complete survey of traditional instruments. The book includes literary references to musical instruments from sources that span the tenth to the. twentieth centuries, and it describes in detail the musical instruments' dual roles as 'instruments of culture' and as devices for producing sound. Easy to use and concise, the book is a readable overview of the nation's musical heritage.

Joachim Tielke. Kunstvolle Musikinstrumente des Barock by Barbara Hellwig, Friedemann Hellwig

Book description

La Guitare (The guitar - La Chitarra). Paris 1650 - 1950. (Tome I) by Daniel Sinier / Françoise de Rider

Book description
The guitar is probably one of the world's widely-played musical instrument, as well as the most frequntently produced. Over the centuries it has adaptated to composorers' needs and musicians' tastes, to new styles of performing music, to progress in the field of strings, glues and warnishes, keeping pace with fashion and oblivion. After 35 years spendt observing and restoring guitars, encouraged by colleagues and friends, we feel the need to make our experiences public. These range from the period of ostentation, the 17th century, down to the early experiences of industrial manufacture in the 20th century. Without making any claims in historical or musicological terms, we dedicate the first book in the series to guitar artisans, the parisian luthiers who invented the instrument. From 1650 to 1950, from Voboam to Bouchet, by way of Pons, Lacote and Laprévotte, who graced the wonderfull 19th century. In all about 50 magnificent instruments are proposed, almost all previously unpublished. Projects, innovations, transformations, and acoustic theories are examined as they contribute to the evolution of the guitar. The instruments published have been carefully selected, and we invite you to discover them one by one, to trace their evolution, to reconstruct the work of a great maestro, of his school, of his pupils and followers

Los Instrumentos Musicales en el Mundo by François-René Tranchefort, Carmen Hernández Molero (traductora)

Book description

Musica getutscht. a treatise on musical instruments (1511) by Sebastian Virdung / Beth Bullard (translator, editor)

Book description
Musica getutscht (Basel, 1511) is the earliest printed treatise on musical instruments in the West. Written by a priest and chapel singer named Sebastian Virdung, it provided rudimentary instruction on playing three instruments: the clavichord, the lute and the recorder. This early 'do-it-yourself' manual of instruction not only tells us about music-making in that era, it also illumines other aspects of society in the years just before the Reformation. Its author communicates in a popular style, choosing a mixture of media: a written text in the guise of an informal conversation, coupled with woodcut illustrations and visual aids. Enthusiasts of early music and its performance as well as historians of art, society and the German language will welcome Beth Bullard's substantial introduction and annotations, which help explain the text of this important work and its place in intellectual history.

Musical instruments and their symbolism in Western art. Studies in Music Iconology by Emanuel Winternitz

Book description
This book first appeared in 1967. In the years since then, it has spawned the new academic sub-discipline of musical iconology, which belongs equally to the histories of art and of music. Emmanuel Winternitz, who was for thirty-one years Curator of Musical Collections at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, is one of the world's leading authorities on the history of musical instruments. He is also an erudite historian of art. Combining these two interests he has for many years studied the innumerable representations of musical instruments in Western art. In this collection of closely related articles, he examines what these pictures tell of the design and construction of instruments, of their performance, practice, and of the often subtle symbolic use to which artists put them. Kithara and cittern, lute and lyre, bagpipe and hurdy-gurdy, and the ubiquitous lira da braccio, all of these figured largely in the art of the Middle Ages or the Renaissance, together with a clutch of shwms, zinks, and crumhorns, and a variety of fantastic instruments that existed only in the imagination of the artists. In more than 200 photographs and many drawings, Winternizt illustrates instruments that range from an Egytptian wall-painting of a harp to a musette in a Watteau Fête champêtre. He draws from the works of Titian, Raphael, Dürer, and Bruegel, and also from medieval manuscripts and sculpture. Winternitz discusses these diverse elements with a combination of formidable learning, wit, and keen insight that makes this book at once a seminal work for scholars and a delight for lovers of art and music.

Musical instruments. historic, rare and unique by Alfred James Hipkins + William Gibb

Book description
It is claimed for this book, intended to illustrate rare historical and beautiful Musical Instruments, that it is unique. Classical, Mediæval, Japanese, and other varieties of Decorative Art, Weapons, and Costumes, have found worthy illustration and adequate description, but hitherto no attempt has been made to represent in a like manner the grace and external charm of fine lutes and harps, of viols, virginals, and other instruments. Engravings have been produced, in historical or technical works; but the greater number of these are mere repetitions continued from one to the other, and have no specially æsthetic interest. Beauty of form and fitness of decoration demand more than the commonplace homage paid to simple use, and while we should never lose sight of the purpose of a musical instrument, its capacity to produce agreeable and various sounds, we pan take advantage of its form and material, and, making it lovely to look upon, give pleasure to the eye as well as the ear. It is hardly necessary to say that the love of adornment or ornament is an attribute of the human race. It is to be found everywhere and in every epoch when life is, for the time being, safe and the means of existence secure. Some favourite manner of decoration is the characteristic stamp of a people, a period, or a country. The earliest monuments we can point to that represent musical instruments, show a tendency to adorn them or to place them with decorative surroundings. The Egyptians, the Assyrians, the ancient Greeks supply a record that has been continued by the Persians and Saracens, in the Gothic age and the Renaissance, always repeating, as it were, in an ineffaceable script, the precept that the hand should minister to the gratification of the eye, and satisfy it by alternating excitement with repose.

Book description
This catalog highlights over sixty American musical instruments, most drawn from the collection at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. Each instrument, whether toy or masterpiece, offers us much more than just sound. Through their varied forms and functions, each embodies some meaningful aspect of American life: immigration, acculturation, nationalism and warfare, handicraft and industry, entertainment and worship, tradition and innovation. These instruments have evolved to serve complex social purposes that continue to change over the years. Even when silent, their designs, materials, and decorations, reflect our multifaceted culture.

Reed Instruments. The Montagu Collection. An Annotated Catalogue (Fallen Leaf Reference Books in Music) by Jeremy Montagu

Book description
The Montagu Collection, of worldwide coverage and all types of instruments, began to take shape in the early 1960's when what had been a small and very random collection was then rapidly expanded to illustrate lectures, and to provide material for research, on all aspects of organology. By 1967, when Jeremy Montagu mounted an exhibition in Sheffield and for that reason started his ledger catalogue, the number of instruments had reached about 450. It has now, thirty years later, reached nearly 2,500. The Collection is always accessible to interested persons.

Syntagma musicum, II. De organographia. Parts I and II by Michael Praetorius / David Z. Crookes (Traductor)

Book description
Translated and edited from the edition of 1619 by David Z. Crookes Over the last dozen or so years the musical landscape has been changed significantly by the revival of early instrumental music. People are now making and playing many Renaissance and early baroque instruments which until recently were not even mentioned in standard dictionaries. Praetorius's De Organographia , first published in 1618, can be called the book behind the revival. While it has long been an essential tool for musicologists, it is now exercising a wider, more popular appeal as the growing multitude of instrument makers and players seek to base its efforts on this documentation Praetorius has provided. De Organographia is beyond argument the most important period book on musical instruments ever to be written. No comparable work gives us the wide range, the clarity of description, and above all the scale drawings that we find in Praetorius. CONTENIDO: Introduction, Translation, Commentary, Bibliography, Plates (42)

The Complete Encyclopedia of Musical Instruments by Bert Oling, Heinz Wallisch

Book description
This book is one that you might expect to find buried in the books section of a discount club superstore, along with picture books on dogs and cats, plants, flowers and birds, World War II, Corvettes and Ferraris and other assorted planes, trains and automobiles, and what-have-you. And that is precisely where I happened to stumble across it while recently "weekend shopping." However, I don't think it particularly likely that the typical Amazon.com shopper looking for such a book will trip over it here, except by accident. So perhaps my thoughts on the book will bring it some additional customer exposure. It is not bad for what it is, it is lavishly illustrated (although not of "coffee table book" size), and it is certainly inexpensive enough.
