A Psimple Psaltery by Eric Meier

Book description
They have the most wonderful ringing sound of nearly any musical instrument heard, with a haunting sustain that makes the music seemingly float in midair and tingle in your ears. They are easy to play, (featuring a range of two octaves, and no fingering positions to learn), and in their most basic form are fairly simple to build. As with any instrument, the bowed psaltery can be as simple or extravagant as you want to make it. In this book, a plan is pre-sented for a simple psaltery. By changing the layout and shape to a basic triangle, and eliminating some of the more intricate steps—along with giving in-depth and thorough directions—building a bowed psaltery is available for just about everyone. Everything you need to know in order to build a bowed psaltery can be found in this book. All that is needed are basic woodworking tools, a few small specialty items available online, and a persistent passion for making music.

Making Stringed Instruments. A Workshop Guide by George Buchanan

Book description
There is a dichotomy in this book. Only an experienced cabinetmaker would be able to fill in the book's gaps and come up with a good-looking though not necessarily playable instrument; yet, the book is apparently written for the enthusiastic putterer who needs different saws and their uses identified. The section on choosing woods, for instance, gives no more than general guidelines; the brief section on varnishes is more concerned with looks than sound. Scale drawings are negated being caught in the binding. This is truly a do-it-yourself book. There is no mention of where a person could go for further advice and no bibliography. Despite copious and clear line drawings and a few photos, this is not recommended.

The Mandolin Project. A Workshop Guide to Building Mandolins by Graham McDonald

Book description
Suited for first-time builders with limited woodworking skills as well as those looking for a challenge, this workshop manual features four mandolin projects that range from a simple flat top and back model to the more complex, fully carved “A” style mandolin. The accompanying narrative offers step-by-step instruction in a relaxed, conversational style that not only explains what and how something should be done but also why it’s executed in that particular manner. A set of full-size, detailed plans pairs with photographs, diagrams, and illustrations to round out the instruction materials. The Science of String Instruments by Thomas D. Rossing (Editor)

Book description
This book will be a non-technical book on string instruments that includes some technical information as well. The emphasis will be on the practical understanding of string instruments, with the interests of performers and instrument builders in the forefront. Authors of the chapters will be musicians, scientists, and instrument designers and builders with practical experience. The mathematics will be kept as simple as possible by translating ideas from the language of physics (mathematics) to non-mathematical language. Considerable emphasis will be placed on the design and construction of string instruments. Following the structure of the author’s successful Science of Percussion Instruments (World Scientific, 2000), technical ideas will be presented as "interludes." Readers who wish to go beyond the simple ideas in this book can easily follow the references to more scientific books and to the original scientific literature. From the Back Cover Many performing musicians, as well as instrument builders, are coming to realize the importance of understanding the science of musical instruments. This book explains how string instruments produce sound. It presents basic ideas in simple language, and it also translates some more sophisticated ideas in non-technical language. It should be of interest to performers, researchers, and instrument makers alike. About the Author Tom Rossing has taught musical acoustics for nearly 50 years, and has been active in research in this area for at least 30 years. In 1992 he was awarded the Silver Medal in Musical Acoustics by the Acoustical Society of America, and his biography is included in The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians. He is also the editor of the 2006 Springer Handbook of Acoustics. In 2009 he was awarded the ASA Gold Medal by the Acoustical Society of America for contributions to musical acoustics, leadership in science education, and service to the Society.
