Acoustic Guitar Making. How to make Tools, Templates, and Jigs by Brian Gary Forbes

Book description
This book contains everything I wish I knew when I started making acoustic guitars over fifteen years ago. It is not an ABC book, but a companion that teaches many of the things that the other books leave out. In these pages are instructions for making tools, cutting blanks, inlaying exotic woods, and hand finishing guitars. The methods described revolve around doing more with less, and getting more out of the tools already in the shop. For the thrifty guitar maker who would rather build something than buy it, this book is the right choice. • Over 500 pages of text, with more than 1600 pictures and diagrams to thoroughly and completely explain more than 200 guitar making topics. • How to use small shop tools to re-saw blanks for guitar making instead of buying them, saving money and expanding wood choice. • Instructions for almost 50 tools, templates, and jigs that can be made right in the shop, saving thousands of dollars in tool costs. These include an electric side bending iron, fret slot duplicating jig, four different types of clamps, an inexpensive hide glue pot, and more. • An explanation of the use and abilities of several common shop tools, including several specialty tools that are specific to guitar making. • A detailed section on guitar making theory, which will expand the understanding of how a guitar works, and how small changes to the structure can have big effects on tone. • Several step by step guitar making methods that make some of the more difficult processes easier and smoother in the shop. • How to make inlaying easier by using a few common shop tools, and how to make several different styles of custom inlay. • Step by step instructions for making a custom soundhole label using a powerful free program called Pixlr, to add the final touch to any guitar. • A thorough finishing section that teaches anyone how to apply an amazing finish without having to buy expensive spray equipment. • A guitar making and wood working glossary with thorough definitions and explanations of more than 600 terms.

Acoustique des instruments de musique by Antoine Chaigne, Jean Kergomard, Xavier Boutillon, Jean-Pierre Dalmont

Book description

Build Your Own Acoustic Guitar. Complete Instructions and Full-Size Plans by Jonathan Kinkead

Book description
Every guitarist dreams of owning a handmade instrument, but for most, the cost is likely to be prohibitive. The alternative - building your own fine guitar - is not as difficult as you might imagine, given some skill, patience, and the expert guidance of a master luthier. Every step of construction is fully covered, from choice, selection, and preparation of woods, to consideration of size, bracing, and tonal qualities. Each step of the building sequence is clearly photographed in color, with variations to the standard design shown to enable you to personalize your instrument as you make it. Briston, England-based Jonathan Kinkead has been building guitars for nearly 30 years. His craft is born out of experience and intuition rather than a strict following of technical detail. The resulting beauty of form and distinctive tone have earned him his reputation as one of the world's most respected independent luthiers.

Computational Mechanics of the Classical Guitar by Rolf Bader

Book description
Computational Mechanics of the Classical Guitar describes a new dynamic paradigm in instrument acoustics based on time-dependent transient analysis and simulation of complete musical instruments. It describes the current state of theoretical and experimental research into the guitar for engineers, instrument makers and musicians. This includes a summary of the basic equations for the mechanics of vibrating bodies and a presentation of the FDM (finite difference method) model with which the true vibrational behaviour of the instrument as an entire system can be understood for the first time. This monograph presents various new theoretical and experimental results and insights into guitar playing such as the coupling between the strings and the top plate or a description of the finger noise made when the fingers slide over the strings before plucking.

Inventing the American Guitar. The Pre-Civil War Innovations of C.F. Martin and His Contemporaries by David C.D. Gansz, James Westbrook, Peter Szego (Editor),

Book description
Inventing the American Guitar is the first book to describe the early history of American guitar design in detail. It tells the story of how a European instrument was transformed into one with all of the design and construction features that define the iconic American flat-top guitar. This transformation happened within a mere 20 years, a remarkably brief period. The person who dominates this history is C. F. Martin Sr., America s first major guitar maker and the founder of the Martin Guitar Company, which continues to produce outstanding flat-top guitars today. After emigrating from his native Saxony to New York in 1833, Martin quickly established a guitar making business, producing instruments modelled after those of his mentor, Johann Stauffer of Vienna. By the time he moved his family and business to rural Pennsylvania in 1839, Martin had absorbed and integrated the influence of Spanish guitars he had seen and heard in New York. In Pennsylvania, he evolved further, inventing a uniquely American guitar that was fully developed before the outbreak of the Civil War. Inventing the American Guitar traces Martin s evolution as a craftsman and entrepreneur and explores the influences and experiments that led to his creation of the American guitar that is recognised and played around the world today.

Joachim Tielke. Kunstvolle Musikinstrumente des Barock by Barbara Hellwig, Friedemann Hellwig

Book description

La Guitare (The guitar - La Chitarra). Paris 1650 - 1950. (Tome I) by Daniel Sinier / Françoise de Rider

Book description
The guitar is probably one of the world's widely-played musical instrument, as well as the most frequntently produced. Over the centuries it has adaptated to composorers' needs and musicians' tastes, to new styles of performing music, to progress in the field of strings, glues and warnishes, keeping pace with fashion and oblivion. After 35 years spendt observing and restoring guitars, encouraged by colleagues and friends, we feel the need to make our experiences public. These range from the period of ostentation, the 17th century, down to the early experiences of industrial manufacture in the 20th century. Without making any claims in historical or musicological terms, we dedicate the first book in the series to guitar artisans, the parisian luthiers who invented the instrument. From 1650 to 1950, from Voboam to Bouchet, by way of Pons, Lacote and Laprévotte, who graced the wonderfull 19th century. In all about 50 magnificent instruments are proposed, almost all previously unpublished. Projects, innovations, transformations, and acoustic theories are examined as they contribute to the evolution of the guitar. The instruments published have been carefully selected, and we invite you to discover them one by one, to trace their evolution, to reconstruct the work of a great maestro, of his school, of his pupils and followers

La guitarra en Castilla-La Mancha by Luis F.Leal Pinar

Book description

Making Stringed Instruments. A Workshop Guide by George Buchanan

Book description
There is a dichotomy in this book. Only an experienced cabinetmaker would be able to fill in the book's gaps and come up with a good-looking though not necessarily playable instrument; yet, the book is apparently written for the enthusiastic putterer who needs different saws and their uses identified. The section on choosing woods, for instance, gives no more than general guidelines; the brief section on varnishes is more concerned with looks than sound. Scale drawings are negated being caught in the binding. This is truly a do-it-yourself book. There is no mention of where a person could go for further advice and no bibliography. Despite copious and clear line drawings and a few photos, this is not recommended.

The influences of previous instruments and technological developments are outlined. The Guitar and Its Music. from the Renaissance to the Classical Era by James Tyler, Paul Sparks

Book description
Following on from James Tyler's The Early Guitar: A History and Handbook(O.U.P. 1980) this collaboration with Paul Sparks (their previous book for O.U.P., The Early Mandolin, appeared in 1989), presents new ideas and research on the history and development of the guitar and its music from the Renaissance to the dawn of the Classical era. Tyler's systematic study of the two main guitar types found between about 1550 and 1750 focuses principally on what the sources of the music (published and manuscript) and the writings of contemporary theorists reveal about the nature of the instruments and their roles in the music making of the period. The annotated lists of primary sources, previously published in The Early Guitar but now revised and expanded, constitute the most comprehensive bibliography of Baroque guitar music to date. His appendices of performance practice information should also prove indispensable to performers and scholars alike. Paul Sparks also breaks new ground, offering an extensive study of a period in the guitar's history-notably c.1759-c.1800-which the standard histories usually dismiss in a few short paragraphs. Far from being a dormant instrument at this time, the guitar is shown to have been central to music-making in France, Italy, the Iberian Peninsula, and South America. Sparks provides a wealth of information about players, composers, instruments, and surviving compositions from this neglected but important period, and he examines how the five-course guitar gradually gave way to the six-string instrument, a process that occurred in very different ways (and at different times) in France, Italy, Spain, Germany, and Britain.

The Guitar Maker´s Workshop by Rik Middleton

Intended as a beginner's guide for experienced woodworkers interested in making a guitar, this book assumes a fairly complete knowledge of woodworking tools and techniques and also an intermediate level of skill in finishing and detail work. Long-time luthier Middleton uses the old European approach to making a stringed instrument, including carving, gluing, bracing, and finishing, which he defends as desirable in handmade instruments,. But instrument-making supply companies now offer a variety of purpose-built tools and woodworking supplies that greatly simplify the old-fashioned process. To ignore these tools and supplies makes it much more difficult for a beginner to complete such a project. The book is handsomely produced, with detailed photos and clearly written text.

The Ramirez Collection. History and Romance of the Spanish Guitar by Brian Whitehouse

Book description
The House of José Ramírez, Spain's longest established guitar maker, was founded in Madrid in 1882. Over many years it has built and conserved a Museum Collection of instruments constructed by members of the family and other great Spanish luthiers, many of whom were trained in their workshops. For the first time in this long and distinguished history, new and unique recordings of these highly important guitars, including those that belonged to the legendary Andres Segovia, are presented here played by Brian Whitehouse, concert guitarist, composer and aficionado. All these wonderful instruments, displaying over two centuries of the luthiers' art, are beautifully illustrated together with detailed descriptions. Photographs and notes relate their place in the history of music and biographical details are given of the luthiers, players and composers contemporary to their construction. Many interesting anecdotes are told and the project captures, in a highly illuminating way, the spirit of these wonderful artistic creations - The History and Romance of the Spanish Guitar.

The Responsive Guitar (Vol 1 and 2) 2-book Boxed Set by Ervin Somogyi

Book description
This limited edition silver-embossed, facsimile-autographed, slipcase holds both books. These books are essential for anyone who is interested in a comprehensive account of the modern guitar, and how a highly responsive guitar is made. They offer info from one of the most-revered luthiers of our times. No publication has ever presented trade secrets and practical information to truly change the way a person makes or appreciates the steel-stringed guitar. Ervin Somogyi is a Hungarian-born master luthier whose guitars are renowned for their responsiveness and tone trademarks for a great guitar. After almost five decades of making this instrument, teaching and writing about the development and construction of the guitar, Somogyi reveals the methods, techniques and philosophy behind his legendary instruments. The Responsive Guitar is about physics, dynamics, acoustics and construction of the guitar. It's about the mechanics of tone; what materials to build with, when to add or remove wood for maximum benefit, and why those techniques work. Somogyi explains in exquisite detail how the guitar makes sound, and what musicians and luthiers need to know in order to appreciate a really well-made guitar. This book sets the foundation for the matching volume Making the Responsive Guitar . Making the Responsive Guitar is the second volume on a two-volume set of books that set out the principles and methods of building fine hand-made guitars. Where Volume 1 sets up the knowledge, this book is about how to build a guitar, from the very first step to the last.

The Science of String Instruments by Thomas D. Rossing (Editor)

Book description
This book will be a non-technical book on string instruments that includes some technical information as well. The emphasis will be on the practical understanding of string instruments, with the interests of performers and instrument builders in the forefront. Authors of the chapters will be musicians, scientists, and instrument designers and builders with practical experience. The mathematics will be kept as simple as possible by translating ideas from the language of physics (mathematics) to non-mathematical language. Considerable emphasis will be placed on the design and construction of string instruments. Following the structure of the author’s successful Science of Percussion Instruments (World Scientific, 2000), technical ideas will be presented as "interludes." Readers who wish to go beyond the simple ideas in this book can easily follow the references to more scientific books and to the original scientific literature. From the Back Cover Many performing musicians, as well as instrument builders, are coming to realize the importance of understanding the science of musical instruments. This book explains how string instruments produce sound. It presents basic ideas in simple language, and it also translates some more sophisticated ideas in non-technical language. It should be of interest to performers, researchers, and instrument makers alike. About the Author Tom Rossing has taught musical acoustics for nearly 50 years, and has been active in research in this area for at least 30 years. In 1992 he was awarded the Silver Medal in Musical Acoustics by the Acoustical Society of America, and his biography is included in The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians. He is also the editor of the 2006 Springer Handbook of Acoustics. In 2009 he was awarded the ASA Gold Medal by the Acoustical Society of America for contributions to musical acoustics, leadership in science education, and service to the Society.
