Musica getutscht. a treatise on musical instruments (1511) by Sebastian Virdung / Beth Bullard (translator, editor)
Book description Musica getutscht (Basel, 1511) is the earliest printed treatise on musical instruments in the West. Written by a priest and chapel singer named Sebastian Virdung, it provided rudimentary instruction on playing three instruments: the clavichord, the lute and the recorder. This early 'do-it-yourself' manual of instruction not only tells us about music-making in that era, it also illumines other aspects of society in the years just before the Reformation. Its author communicates in a popular style, choosing a mixture of media: a written text in the guise of an informal conversation, coupled with woodcut illustrations and visual aids. Enthusiasts of early music and its performance as well as historians of art, society and the German language will welcome Beth Bullard's substantial introduction and annotations, which help explain the text of this important work and its place in intellectual history.

The Complete Encyclopedia of Musical Instruments by Bert Oling, Heinz Wallisch
Book description This book is one that you might expect to find buried in the books section of a discount club superstore, along with picture books on dogs and cats, plants, flowers and birds, World War II, Corvettes and Ferraris and other assorted planes, trains and automobiles, and what-have-you. And that is precisely where I happened to stumble across it while recently "weekend shopping." However, I don't think it particularly likely that the typical Amazon.com shopper looking for such a book will trip over it here, except by accident. So perhaps my thoughts on the book will bring it some additional customer exposure. It is not bad for what it is, it is lavishly illustrated (although not of "coffee table book" size), and it is certainly inexpensive enough.

The Oxford Companion to Musical Instruments by Anthony Baines
Book description Anthony C. Baines provides a comprehensive guide to the astonishing variety of Western and non-Western musical instruments. Each entry in this lavishly illustrated book offers a concise description of the instrument, as well as a wealth of information on such subjects as playing techniques, harmonics and circular breathing, the sound of an instrument, acoustics, pitch, an instrument's use within the orchestral repertoire or, for ethnomusicological instruments, within ritual, and significant developments in its history. Baines covers a vast array of instruments, from the common cowbell, to the Red-hot fountain pen (a novelty instrument of the 1930s), to the Celtic harp.
About the Author
Anthony Baines is the retired Curator of the Bate Collection of Historical Instruments in the University of Oxford. The author of several books and articles on instruments, he co-founded the Galpin Society, formed in 1946 to promote the study of musical instruments, and edited its journal 1956-63, and from 1971.
