The symphony is one of the earliest examples of a 'wheel-bowed' instrument, the best known of which is the hurdy gurdy. Like the hurdy gurdy it is played by turning a rosined wheel which touches the strings causing them to vibrate whilst the different notes are produced by depressing keys which stop the strings at different positions. But the symphony's wheel is much smaller as it is totally enclosed within the rectangular body of the instrument. The body also acts as the tangent box and houses the soundboard and strings making the symphony an extremely compact instrument. The symphony produces a quiet melodic sound entirely suitable for indoor playing and vocal accompaniment. [more about the symphony]
