RWC Finished and Kit Nakers

En: Nakers, Nakir, Es: Nácara, Fr: Anacaire, Nacaire, It: Nachera, De: Gürtelpauken

The origin of the word naker dates back to the time of the Crusades appearing as 'neqqareh' in the Turkish and Arabic language.

Small kettle drums (known as nakers) and tabors of Arabic or Saracenic origin came to Europe with the 13th century crusades.

Nakers first appeared in England in the early 14th century. They were used in chamber music and for accompanying songs as well as in dance and processional music.

The two spun copper bowls are strapped one either side of the player who is often depicted as mounted on horseback.

RWC Finished and Kit Nakers

RWC Nakers

Our finished Nakers comprise two hand spun copper shells of equal diameter (10" = 25cm) but a difference in tone is created by setting one with a snare and resonating hole.

The tension on the skin (head) and hence the pitch for either is adjusted by sliding the knotted leather buffs along the hemp ropes.

Our nakers come complete with beaters.

Each instrument is hand built to special order in our own workshops in Toledo (Spain) to the highest standard of craftsmanship and comes with 12 months warranty.
