The name crumhorn first appears in 1489 as an organ stop, which suggests that crumhorns had been in common usage for some time. In fact they were probably one of the earliest windcap instruments and certainly the most popular. They have a rather strident buzzy tone generated by the curved 'horn' which projects the sound towards the listening audience. The 'wind' cap itself protects the reed and also creates a wind chamber, removing the need for embouchure control. [more about the Crumhorns]
