Coda to The Setup & Repair of the Double Bass for Optimum Sound by Chuck Traeger (Author), Bill Merchant (Illustrator), Henry Strobel (editor)

Book description
From the Prologue by Chuck Traeger: About the title, the dictionary definition of the word coda is: music; A: a concluding passage, the function of which is to bring a composition to a cogent and well-proportioned close. My wife, June, suggested this title because that is exactly what I am doing here. This booklet is the conclusion of my research and my writing. It is not that there is no more to be done. It is that at eighty three I am running out of the time to do it. From the back cover: Chuck Traeger has continued his research into what makes a double bass sound and play at its maximum potential with this CODA to his magnum opus, The Setup and Repair of the Double Bass for Optimum Sound. Contained herein are new sound setup discoveries and repair tips. The book also features pictures of ten signed instruments by name makers, photographed by Bill Merchant. About the Author Author Chuck Traeger is an artist bassist and expert repairer who operated a top professional bass shop in New York City for many years. He was the principal author, with David Brownell and Bill Merchant, of The Setup & Repair of the Double Bass for Optimum Sound. In the 40s and 50s he performed with the who's who of jazz in NYC - Sidney Bechet, Marian McPartland, Bunk Johnson, Bob Wilber, Eddie Condon, etc. He later became a highly respected bass repairman in New York City with clients from the NY Philharmonic to Ron Carter. He is now retired in upstate New York with June, his wife of over fifty years.

Four Centuries of Violin Making: Fine Instruments from the Sotherby's Archive by Tim Ingles (Author), John Dilworth (Author)

Book description
This publication features beautiful colour photographs of 225 fine stringed instruments (violins, violas, cellos and double basses), by more than 75 important violin makers. As the leading auction house for stringed instruments, Sotheby's has amassed one of the most extensive photo archives of antique instruments, and this book illustrates the highlights of their archive. In addition to featuring numerous examples from famous makers, such as those of the Amati, Gagliano, Guarneri, Guadagnini and Stradivari families, the book also includes important examples from lesser-known makers, such as Gregorio Antoniazzi, Giovanni Maria del Bussetto, Felix Mori Costa and Francesco Emiliani. Tim Ingles, head of Sotheby's Musical Instruments Department, has written a brief biography of each of the 75 featured violin makers, incorporating results from modern research that is shedding new light on the lives and interactions of these historical figures. The introduction by John Dilworth gives an overview of the evolution of violin making from its dawn in the 16th century to its current state.

Instrumentation and the art of violin making. (Violin makers Keith and Ray Doerr use their mechanical engineering expertise) by Jerry H. Hamelink (Author)

Book description
This digital document is an article from Mechanical Engineering-CIME, published by American Society of Mechanical Engineers on October 1, 1989. Citation Details Title: Instrumentation and the art of violin making. (violin makers Keith and Ray Doerr use their mechanical engineering expertise) Author: Jerry H. Hamelink Publication: Mechanical Engineering-CIME (Refereed) Date: October 1, 1989 Publisher: American Society of Mechanical Engineers INSTRUMENTATION AND The Art Of Violin Making By creating devices to measure the properties of the wood, the Doerr brothers have brought their expertise in mechanical engineering to bear on a centuries-old craft. Keith and Ray Doerr, of Battle Creek, Mich., became involved in violin making some 55 years ago when their father, a skilled machinist, decided to make his first violin. Ray has a degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Michigan. He and his brother have retired from working in machine shops. In the course of their experience, the brothers, neither of whom plays the violin, discovered that a violin built to the dimensions specified in the literature had only a four percent chance of producing a…

Making Stringed Instruments: A Workshop Guide by George Buchanan (Author)

Book description
There is a dichotomy in this book. Only an experienced cabinetmaker would be able to fill in the book's gaps and come up with a good-looking though not necessarily playable instrument; yet, the book is apparently written for the enthusiastic putterer who needs different saws and their uses identified. The section on choosing woods, for instance, gives no more than general guidelines; the brief section on varnishes is more concerned with looks than sound. Scale drawings are negated being caught in the binding. This is truly a do-it-yourself book. There is no mention of where a person could go for further advice and no bibliography. Despite copious and clear line drawings and a few photos, this is not recommended.

The Violin Explained: Components, Mechanism, and Sound by James Beament (Author)

Book description
There are more curious beliefs about the violin than any other instrument. Physicists have now discovered how the violin family produce their sound, but this knowledge is not generally accessible to players and makers. In this book, now available in paperback, Sir James Beament, a distinguished scientist with a livelong involvement with musical instruments, explains, without asssuming any scientific background, how strings vibrate, and the role played by the bow, bridge, and body in producing sound. Those discoveries do not give a satisfactory explanation of what we hear, and the core of the book explains how the sound relates to the sensations it produces. This leads to the conclusion that most of the myths about violins are groundless, but also that nothing can be achieved by applying modern technology to making or playing. Practical advice on strings, maintenance, purchase and children's instruments completes the discussion.

Violin Making: A Practical Guide by Juliet Barker (Author)

Book description
Aimed at both amateur and skilled woodworkers, this handsomely illustrated, step–by–step guide brings the art of violin making within the reach of all. Featuring 200 color photos and diagrams. From Stradivarius to the modern day, violins have been revered as much for the beauty of their design as for their music. Violin Making enables anyone, whether a beginner or a skilled woodworker, to follow in the tradition of the Italian masters and, literally, make their own music. The book includes: a short history of violin making; an introduction to materials, design, and techniques; chapters on each stage of making a violin, from the rib structure to varnishing and stringing the instrument; tables of measurements, including violins, violas, and cellos from quarter to full size; and 200 clear color photos and diagrams. Juliet Barker trained at the Bavarian School of Violin Making; she is a professional violin maker, restorer, and teacher.

Violin Varnish. A Plausible Re-creation of the Varnish Used by the Italian Violin Makers Between the Years 1550 and 1750. by Joseph Michelman

Book description
After more than eight years of extensive research on the varnish used by the Italian Violin Makers from 1550 to 1750 A. D., it has not been possible to corroborate the results in the chemical laboratory. This is due entirely to the unavailability of samples of the varnish for confirmatory analysis. Violins made by the Italian masters of this period are so valuable and so scarce that a small sample of the varnish has not been procurable for experimental purposes. Therefore, synthesis must precede analysis .... and with no assistance from the latter.
