Making Gourd Musical Instruments: Over 60 String,
Wind & Percussion Instruments & How to Play Them
by Ginger Summit (Author), Jim Widess (Author)
Book description
The authors introduce readers to make-it-yourself musical instruments. There
is an amazing wealth of information here, covering not only how-to's and
history but also extending into the social sciences and even science. We
learn that pigeon flutes (crafted gourds attached to the birds' tails) were
first mentioned about A.D. 1041 A.D. and that drummers are highly respected
in India. Actual instructions on gourd transformations into spike fiddles,
water drums, and even xylophones are included, along with a few photographs.
But all the erudition tends to drown out the craft aspect, since
instructions are sandwiched within the narrative text, and photographs are
less than optimal. Nonetheless, a book that patient crafters will
appreciate. Barbara Jacobs Historically, ethnic groups in many countries
have used a great number of musical instruments made from gourds. In North
America these instruments are used mainly by percussionists. Most of the
step-by-step projects in this book by gourd artists Summit and Widess (The
Complete Book of Gourd Craft) are for percussion or stringed instruments
such as the Latin American guiro (gourd scraper) or the spike fiddle. There
are also a few from the wind family, such as the fipple flute. These are
legitimate musical instruments made from traditional materials, and they are
fully playable as well as being beautifully crafted. Highly recommended for
general crafts as well as ethnomusicology collections.
Hardcover: 144 pages.

The Bassanos: Venetian Musicians and Instrument
Makers in England, 1531-1665 by David Lasocki
(Author), Roger Prior (Author)
Book description
In the 1530s, five brothers from the Bassano family, outstanding wind
players and instrument makers, emigrated from Venice to England. This is a
study of these brothers, their sons and daughter and their grandsons. The
first half of the book discusses the everyday affairs of the family - their
relationships, religion, property, law suits, finances and standing in
society. Two chapters are devoted to Emilia Bassano, whose identification as
the "dark lady" of Shakespeare's sonnets is supported by a wealth of
evidence. The second half of the book discusses the family's musical
activities. At the English court, the Bassanos founded a recorder consort
that lasted 90 years; they also played in the flute/cornett and shawn/sackbutt
consorts. As instrument makers their fame extended throughout Europe. The
book's appendices present information on the Venetian branch of the family
and the musical activities of the English branch since 1665.

The Flute (Yale Musical Instrument Series)
by Ardal Powell (Author)
Book description
With these two volumes, the publisher launches its promising "Musical
Instrument" series, in which noted scholars/ performers discuss instruments
in light of the newest research. Forthcoming titles will cover the piano,
the clarinet, the cello, the violin, and the trumpet. Montagu has played
timpani and percussion professionally for more than 50 years and oversaw the
Bate Collection of Musical Instruments at Oxford, and Powell is a noted solo
flautist and president of Folkers & Powell, Makers of Historical Flutes, in
Hudson, NY. Each has written an informative and authoritative guide for
those with previous background in these instruments and a serious desire to
understand their place in history. Taking a chronological approach, the
authors trace the instruments from earliest known records and discuss the
changes in construction, social context, and repertory, as well as notable
performers and makers. Montagu's appendixes include information about
playing techniques and the construction of percussion instruments, and
Powell's reference section contains extremely valuable coverage of past and
current scholarship on flutes. In addition to being well written, the books
are sturdy and beautifully illustrated. Highly recommended for academic
libraries, public libraries where an interest in music is strong, and
upper-level music students generally. Timothy J. McGee, Univ. of Toronto

The Keyed Flute by Johann George Tromlitz (Oxford
Early Music Series) by Johann George Tromlitz
(Author), Ardal Powell (Editor)
Book description
Ardal Powell, a leading authority on and maker of early flutes, offers here
a translation and study of J. G. Tromlitz's tutor for the eight-keyed flute,
first published in German in 1800. Powell explores the instrument's history
and assesses Tromlitz's importance as a designer. The volume contains
information vital to the historically informed performance of classical and
Romantic music. `If no other praise were due, the mere fact of his
translating these books would have indebted the general, and specifically
the English-speaking readers to Ardal Powell...More, and even higher praise
is merited by the fact that Mr Powell placed this text in its historical
context and perspective...The translation of Tromlitz's text makes fluent
and comfortable reading. It does not feel as a translation. No mean
feat!...Ardal Powell suceeds eminently in establishing Tromlitz, with Johann
Joachim Quantz before and Theobald Boehm after him as the pioneering maker,
teacher and theoretician he undoubtedly was. providing the flute world with
a book that puts the development of the flute from 1800 to this day in a
better and more consequential perspective. Bravo.' FOMRHI

Woodwind for schools by
Peter Tomlin
Book description
Peter Tomlin gives a remarkably complete introduction to woodwind instrument
making using very basic tools. After some introductory material he walks the
student through making a Transverse Flute, a Clarinet, an Oboe and a
Bassoon. New operations are described as they are needed and there are many
clear dimensioned drawings. The text is terse and the reader is expected to
think things through, but there are few gaps. An excellent little book (70
pages) and almost completely unknown outside the U.K. Someone should reprint
it.
