Islamic Designs from Egypt
by Pepin Press (Corporate Author)
Book description
The culture of the Muslim world has developed a very specific type of
ornamental design, which is grounded in the religious demands of Islam. Also
known as Arabesque, the visual language of Islamic design employs a variety
of geometric patterns, floral elements and ornate calligraphy, all of which
are used to decorate furniture and buildings. The flowing nature and
mathematical rigour of the Arabesque evoke a sense of eternity and order,
which has proved to be aesthetically pleasing. ISLAMIC PATTERNS FROM EGYPT
presents a collection of architectural ornamental designs originating from
two of the most important cultural centres in the Islamic world, the
mediaeval Egyptian cities of Cairo and Alexandria. Originally used as tiling
and basreliefs for mosques, tombs and private houses, these designs
constitute masterpieces of Islamic ornamental design that have lost none of
their appeal today. In the present edition, the ornaments, borders and
interlocking patterns of this historical style are made available for
contemporary use.

Lost Secrets of Flemish Painting
by
Book description
Lost Secrets of Flemish Painting, is a work devoted solely to documenting in
detail the varnishes, painting mediums and painting methods used by
Renaissance and Baroque craftsmen and painters. Now, for the first time in
one book, painters and historians will find listed not only clear directions
for replicating the visual effects found on XVI and XVII century paintings
in oil, but also have at their fingertips the early historical documents
which describe the practices used by painters and craftsmen before 1700.
Also included in this work is the first complete English translation of the
De Mayerne manuscript B.M. Sloane 2052. The notes of the XVIIth century's
most renowned authority on the technical aspects of painting and art, Sir
Theodore Turquet De Mayerne. Originally written in several languages on 170
manuscript pages, these notes comprise the most complete record on the
technical aspects of XVII century painting and craft practices which have
come down to us.

Natural Dyes - sources, tradition, technology,
science by Dominique Cardon
Book description
This authoritive resource is an expanded, corrected and updated translation
of the award winning book Le Monde des Teintures Naturelles (published
2003,Belin,Paris). It is aimed at dyers, scientists, designers, artists,
weavers, spinners, curators, conservators and restorers, museums, research
institutions........ all those who have a professional or personal interest
in, or passion for, colour. At a time when more and more plants and animals
are threatened with extinction by humanity’s ever-increasing pressure on the
land and oceans of the planet, this book sets out to record sources of
colorants discovered and used on all the continents from antiquity until the
present day. Some 300 plants and 30 animals (marine molluscs and scale
insects) are illustrated and discussed by the author, whose passion for
natural dyes, with their colours of unequalled richness and subtlety, has
taken her across the globe in search of dye sources and dyers.

The Contemporary Blacksmith
by Dona Z. Meilach (Author), Daryl Meier (Introduction), Stephen Bondi
(Contributor)
Book description
This important new book tackles the burgeoning revival of the blacksmith's
art. Author Dona Meilach has brought together over 500 works by nearly 200
artist-craftsmen from sixteen countries to illustrate the unprecedented
activity in modern ironwork that has led to its blossoming into a serious
art form. You'll learn several techniques using hot and cold forming with
the results clearly shown. You'll be able to recognize how a fence, railing,
grille, table, chair, knife, and other items evolve, and better appreciate
their design and workmanship. Each chapter provides background for the type
of objects shown-- architectural ironwork, sculpture, furniture, containers
and vessels, lighting fixtures and candleholders, fireplace accessories,
wind vanes, household and liturgical items, and the incredible knives made
of Damascus steel. You'll find ample information for how and where to begin
your own study in this extensive resource list of organizations, Internet
sources, publications, museums, and educational opportunities. The
Contemporary Blacksmith** undoubtedly should be found in the libraries of

The Transfer of Wallpaintings: Based on Danish
Experience by Isabelle Brajer
Book description
The heyday of detaching and transferring wallpaintings is over, a result of
shifting values in conservation and the development of solutions for in situ
treatment. Transfers were carried out in the past for a number of reasons
some of which may seem frivolous or unethical today. The frequency with
which transferring was resorted to reflects the prevailing attitudes and
limited treatment methods at that time.
The transfer of a wall painting is a difficult and risky operation that
affects both the material characteristics and the incorporeal qualities of
the painting. Numerous examples of the negative effects of this procedure
have accumulated in many countries over the centuries and today, we are left
with a vast collection of misplaced, often homeless, paintings, many of
which are in dire need of treatment.
This volume presents a detailed study of the transferred wall paintings in
Denmark. However, the material and case studies presented contain
information of interest to all conservators and others working with wall
paintings. While setting the historical development and theoretical aspects
in context, the author also addresses in detail the various techniques and
materials used in the course of the operations. In addition, the
consequences of this drastic treatment are presented and illustrated by
examples of damage.

faience tile making had found its way from Arabic North Africa from where it
had slowly progressed northward via Spain, Italy (mainly the city of Faenza,
hence the French "faience") and Antwerp to arrive about 1570 in the northern
Dutch province of Friesland. The Royal Tichelaar Makkum from which the
designs in this book originate is the oldest enterprise in the Netherlands
and indeed ranks it among the oldest companies in the world. Many of the
designs this factory has been using over the years have been compiled in an
ancient volume kept in the historical collection of their archives, along
with many examples of actual antique tiles. For the first time a selection
of these has now been made available for publication in this book.
